Don’t Let Yourself Become an Invisible Older Woman

It is sad but true that when you are of a certain age you will most likely become an invisible older woman, at least for some amount of time and under some circumstances. Although your friends, family, and colleagues will continue to recognize and appreciate your presence, much of the world-at-large will cease to acknowledge your material body somewhere around the time your second century begins.

Long-distance truckers will stop blasting diesel horns when they pass you on the highway. Young store clerks will glance right over you, or through you, choosing to engage with customers more their own age and especially those of the opposite sex. No matter how well-dressed and attractive you are, no matter how confidently you carry yourself, you’re going to be ignored more often than not when it comes to participating in the casual social interactions that are essential aspects of daily life, interactions such as grocery shopping, picking up clothes at the dry cleaner, checking books out at the library, or buying stamps at the post office.

These slights are at first shocking. Then, as they happen more often, you tend to become numb to them. But don’t let that happen. If you let yourself accept this rude behavior from others, and rudeness is what it is, then you will never become visible again.

Take a deep breath the next time someone ahead of you walks through a shop door and fails to hold the door open for you because, to that person, you are an invisible older woman. Make sure that person hears your uplifting voice say Thank you!  as if you really mean it, as if the door really were held open for you. Believe me, that’s a shocker to the rude one. When a postal clerk handles your valued transaction as if it were no more than a bother, step up and say, And how are you today?

Not only will you be erasing your status as an invisible older woman, you will also be teaching younger people something they apparently haven’t learned…respect for all of humankind.

Want To Feel Better: Cut Out The Sugar

One of the most dangerous trends in foods is the addition of sugar during the production process.  For years we were told that eating fat was what made us gain weight.  So, about twenty years ago we started to take fat out of foods. Now there are thousands of No Fat and Low Fat food available at the grocery store. 

The problem is fat adds flavor.  When the food manufacturers took the fat out they took the flavor along with it.  Their answer was to add sugar into the mix in order to sweeten it up and make the foods taste better.  Almost overnight, most processed foods had sugar added in the form of high fructose corn syrup.

Along with this increase in sugar concentrations came several health problems including obesity, diabetes, and attention deficit in children.  Is this a coincidence?  It appears not.

As you may have noticed, no carb foods diets have sprung up over the last five years or so to help millions of people get their weight under control.  The main tenant of these diets is the removal of sugars and simple carbohydrates from the foods that are eaten every day.  This results in a dramatic weight loss in most people but it also shows some other side benefits.

When people stop eating sugar they report much better control of blood glucose which can alleviate diabetes.  They also report more clear thinking and less moodiness.  Also, cravings for high calorie foods diminish drastically or even fall away completely.

Not many scientific studies have been done on the effects of all this sugar added into our diets because studies take money and right now the money is coming form the sugar lobby.  They don’t want any proof about how bad sugar really is for us.  

But, if you are overweight, sluggish, moody, and irritable it may be worth your while to spend a week without sugar and see how much better you feel.  I think you will be surprised.

Exercise For Greater Health

Did you know that walking just 30 minutes a day can significantly reduce your chances of developing heart disease and at the same time help you to live longer? If you flip on the TV and go to the channels that have infomercials, after you pass the home based business or how to make money at home infomercial, you’re bound to see some products being sold that makes losing weight or feeling healthier easy. These so-called alternative treatments are mostly a bunch of hogwash.

I remember when there was this product that supposedly helps you to burn fat simply by wearing a belt that vibrates and sends electrical pulses into your body. The appeal was that you didn’t have to do any exercise. All you had to do was sit on your rear and the machine does everything for you. I don’t think that product is selling anymore but from what I can recall, there were complaints of people’s skin being burned by that device.

The point here is this. Forget the gadgets and mystic magical powers of some Eastern healer who can give you better health. What it comes down to is eating the right foods and getting your daily exercise. Yes, it takes work and that’s why these companies can trick so many people by appealing to their laziness but don’t buy into it.
